Usually I scroll past posts like this one, since it's just a repost and not your original thought anyway. However this time I feel like explaining why you got it all wrong 🙃
It's all fun and games until you encounter a tragedy. Loved ones get sick, die or leave us, we lose what we treasure, you name it. Sooner or later something will hit you like a ton of bricks. So people in those trying times tend to look for something that will keep them afloat.
Why not something like an universal morality forged over thousands of years (also called God/ the greatest good/ the highest ideal)? Something so universal people have been relying on it in their hardships since the rise of civilisation. Something that brings out the courage and makes you morally/psychologically unbreakable if you direct yourself towards those ideals. Hear me out, so you get what I'm saying. There is more strengh within you than you know and religion is a toll that helps find it.
So... not "vulnerable people are more likely to follow religion" but "religion helps you stop being vulnerable". Remember Jesus (aka an archetype of dealing with undeserved suffering)? Despite being a good guy he's been betrayed, wrongly accused, hated by crowd, sentenced to death by the worst torture of his times and what did he do? He still believed in his ideal and prevailed. So maybe religion can help you go through whatever hell you're stucked in.
